This recently married couple bought their home for its desirable location, but the house itself, formerly a commercial space, was far from perfect. While they had managed some DIY repairs to make it habitable, the layout was fundamentally flawed for a growing family.
We executed a comprehensive lateral and rear extension, along with a second-story addition, turning a confusing structure into a cohesive home ready for expanding their family and frequent entertaining.
The home had a handful of practical shortcomings—outdated wiring, a laundry area tucked into the kitchen, and only one bathroom. The disjointed layout made everyday routines frustrating and left the growing family feeling uneasy about hosting.
The vision was “open and seamless,” but the property presented challenges due to its angled lot line and a wetland buffer zone. We designed an addition that is stepped in and out to navigate these constraints.
We used 3D renderings to prove that the massive addition wouldn’t look like an afterthought. By matching existing rooflines, we ensured the exterior looked intentional and established from day one.
We also use mood boards to see the cohesive design come together, room by room.
This U-shaped hub features a built-in bench and beverage fridge to keep guests connected to the action without crowding the cook.
Pocket doors conceal a fully equipped organization station, allowing the open living space to remain clutter-free when guests arrive.
In the new addition, they chose to forgo a tub in favor of a spacious, dual-head walk-in shower with a clean, durable finish.

We successfully navigated complex property lines and a disjointed original structure to give this couple the “forever home” they envisioned. By carefully integrating the massive addition with the existing architecture, the house now has a second story, a dedicated primary suite, and a chef’s kitchen that feels like it has always been there.
