Project location: Edmonds, WA
When this family bought their 1990s home, they knew it needed updates, but life got in the way. Five years later, they were finally ready to transform their house into a home that could keep up with their active family’s lifestyle.
We undertook a whole-home remodel to transform the dated, disjointed space into a cohesive, “Coastal Comfort” retreat. The result is a durable, functional home that handles muddy hiking boots just as elegantly as it hosts dinner parties.
In 2016, the homeowners first tried to renovate by hiring an independent, high-end designer rather than a design-build team. The concepts felt “over the top,” quickly exceeded their desired budget, and left them overwhelmed—so they ultimately paused the project.
Meanwhile, the underlying layout and functionality issues remained, and the home’s dated aesthetic made them hesitant to host guests.
We worked closely with the homeowners to ensure this design felt grounded and manageable, avoiding the overwhelm of their previous experience. Relying heavily on 3D renderings, we visualized a “Coastal Comfort” aesthetic that prioritized durability and comfort.
We focused on opening up sightlines, leveling the floors for safety and flow, and selecting materials that could withstand the wear and tear of an active family life.
A new wall, double oven, and expanded counter space replaced the restrictive walled-in pantry, creating the ample room the family desired for their baking adventures.
We transformed a narrow hallway into a command center, featuring a flexible slatwall system and a built-in boot dryer, to manage the family’s ski and bike gear.
The custom-shaped island utilizes a specialized metal support structure to maximize the eat-in area and improve traffic flow without crowding the kitchen.
By listening to the homeowner’s needs rather than pushing an over-the-top agenda, we delivered a home that finally works for them. The “Coastal Comfort” design provides the inviting atmosphere they wanted for entertaining, while the rugged functionality of the mudroom and leveled floors support their active lives. Now, they’re proud to have people over.
Stop fighting your floor plan and start enjoying a space designed to handle your family's adventures.
